How We Started
Uhuru Clothing was founded in Dec 2007 in Dallas TX by Thomas Mwicigi. It started more so out of frustration from a lack of African representation in stores.
From Thomas' eyes: While walking through the mall in Dallas on a cold winter day (dramatic huh) i really wanted to wear something African that woiuld represent me as i went from store to store i was shocked by the lack of African designs. I went up to one lady and she told me they really don't cater to "those people". Really you don't cater to 900 million people? Over 3 million people in the U.S? As i left to go home i was determined to make something for myself. So as days went by i developed different designs that incorporated the African culture and my friends began to ask me to make them some too. The more i made these designs for my friends the more people would come up to me to create, and thus my friends "Uhuru" was born.
I choose the name "Uhuru" because i wanted my company to represent all those people who were told they couldNOT, willNOT, canNOT... this is the freedom to do whatever you want to do, whatever you put your mind do. Claim your UHURU!
